Le Conte d'Hiver. Winter Fairytale.

I made this fur coat for my daughter last December as my special gift with a personal touch to her for Christmas. The inspiration came from lovely children collections from Chloé and Dior seen in Galerie Lafayette, from the fabric that I was lucky to find the same day, and of course, from my daughter herself. And the coat was ready just in time for our visit to see “The Nutcracker” in Paris Opera.

The coat is based on the pattern of a coat from BurdaStyle Kids Spring Holiday Collection in February issue for 2012. I wanted my coat to have slightly flared silhouette and to have a hem ruffle. To make this, I shortened the original pattern of the front and back details by 20cm and then added 3cm flares to the middle of the front details and 6 cm to the center line of the back detail.

Mod.140 BurdaStyle 2/2012

I widened the collar by 3 cm and cut out the neckline for about 1cm.

For the hem ruffle I used all the remaining fabric. Its finished width is 23cm.

The coat is lined with thick matelassé lining except for the sleeves. To avoid extra volume and possible clumsiness in shoulders I used regular lining of the matching color for the sleeves.

For the size 140 - the actual height of my daughter - I used 1m 50cm of synthetic fur. The coat is fastened on 4 sew-on snaps. I added two pompoms on large satin ribbons for a final decorative touch.

My daughter did not want to take her new coat off in the theater and kept it on the whole time we were watching “The Nutcracker”. I think nobody minded that.))

Wishing everyone beautiful winter holidays!

  5. do you know what the fur is called? I have been searching for it online everywhere and can't find it! I want to make it for my little sister :( if you have the name of the parisian shop that stocked this or the website I'd really appreciate it. This coat is absolutely to die for!

    1. Thank you for your comment! I do not know how this type of fur is called - it is an artificial fur, a bit loose in its texture. I bought it almost three years ago in one of those boutiques where they sell mainly different fabrics not on the bolt but in cuts. It is called Sacré Coupons Gentlemen de Tissus. I will add some more close-up pictures of the fur to have a better idea of its texture. Hope that helped!)))

    2. It absolutely does help, thank you. Im wondering if I'd be able to recreate it with nice fur, and doing a zigzag stitch in the same pattern along the front? I might try on scrap. Thank you so much for your reply!
