Masculin - Féminin. "Le Smoking" Dress.

The idea to make a tuxedo dress appeared a couple of years ago, when I was invited to attend a book signing event in London.

The usual story: none of my dresses seemed to work for this special occasion – some were overly feminine, others were too bright… and my usual little black dresses appeared too common. Men would normally wear a suit in these circumstances… And it occurred to me that a tuxedo dress would be just right!.. This genius creation, "le smoking" of Yves Saint Laurent will be celebrating its 50^th anniversary next year, yet the smoking and its variations seem to have never looked so modern as it does today and it is not surprising that it is one of the coveted pieces of wardrobe right now.

Идея воплотить это платье-смокинг появилась еще 2 года назад, когда мне предстоял один интересный выход с мужем.

Ни одно из имевшихся платьев не казалось мне достойным – они были либо подчеркивающе  женственные, либо слишком  яркие, а маленькие черные варианты казались обыденными...Мужчины в таких случаях просто одевают костюм, а я вдруг подумала о платье-смокинге... Гениальное изобретение Ив Сен Лорана, которое в следующем году как раз празднует свое 50-летие...

I found several interesting patterns in BurdaStyle magazine and eventually decided to use the most recent model back then – a dress-coat from November issue for 2012.

For the first time in my practice the pattern did not fit me at all and I spent a lot of time adjusting and correcting it. The back darts, the low waist line, the wrap effect. At some point I wanted to give up and just make a loose vest out of it. But I think, the sleeves with zipper openings were the best part of this pattern, and they fitted so well that I decided to keep them and just keep on adjusting the dress.

В Бурде я нашла несколько интересных вариантов, и решила остановить свой выбор на самом свежем платье-пальто из 11/2012. Должна сказать, что выкройка оказалась самой неудачной, с которой я когда либо сталкивалась, поэтому рекомендовать ее не буду. Добавлю только, что вносила массу изменений: удлинняла вытачки на спине до линии соединения верха и низа,  бесконечно подгоняла линию заниженной талии и запАх, и в конце концов дополнила платье еще одной деталью – пристегивающейся фальш-юбкой.                                        

                                                     

I added an extra detail to this dress: an extra panel that is attached to the waist seams in the front with the help of small buttons. The dress is made of fine costume wool from Hérmes and taffeta. The extra panel is made of taffeta.

Платье сшито из тонкой черной костюмной шерсти Hérmes и синей тафты. Дополнительная деталь  (фальш-юбка) пристегивается на пуговицы к швам притачивания верха и низа и боковых швов.

In the end the dress turned out how I had wanted it to be: the real evening tuxedo dress. 

В результате платье получилось таким, каким оно мне виделось - платьем-смокингом.
