Tendance Doreé

There are pluses and minuses of having too many patterns in your home workshop. One of the minuses is the difficulty of choice. So when I got an invitation for a carnival party in February, I decided not to seek that ideal pattern of a dress but simply make something from a fresh March issue of BurdaStyle magazine. Their wedding collections are always very festive and usually offer several dressy models. I loved many of their dresses and eventually chose this set of a pencil skirt with a peplum top (models 106 and 109).

I had this silk gold jacquard that I wanted to use for something more casual and this set seemed like an ideal plan – I could wear the skirt and the top separately for that sparkly flash that is so in trend right now. I made an experimental model in cotton to see how the bodice fits. As I had only 5mm wide rigilene for the seams, I used to bands of rigilene for each seam. For my height 174cm I made the bodice and the peplum detail longer by about 1cm.

The top has lining in the bodice part. The smooth silk surface of the fabric allowed to make the skirt without any lining. I used about 1m 35cm to make both garments.

  3. Fabulous! It's great that together it looks like a cocktail dress, but the pieces can be worn separately (stating the obvious I know, but I'm thinking this could be really versatile for those of us who don't have cocktail parties to go to all the time!!)

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment Allison! ))
Me too, I was very attracted by the idea of wearing the top and the bottom of the dress separately. Just too add a bit of metallic shine to a sober outfit..))

  5. Hello! I would like to ask for your help.. I am sewing the same top but for some reason the bustpieces turn out pointy because of the bust darts. I wondered wether you had the same problem and if yes if you have a tip on how to adjust the darts :)

    1. Hello Amelie! I did not have this problem with darts. I would suggest ironing the pointy corners of the darts flat. When you iron the bustier darts, you have to flatten them and if you continue to iron from the bottom to the top of the dart seam, it should gradually transition and do not look pointy. Let me know if this explanation is clear enough, or if you need further tips. Hope that helps. Good luck with your top !!!
